The driver is only half the filing

A team bringing an international driver usually plans the driver's petition carefully and then discovers, late, that every mechanic, crew chief and engineer travelling with that driver needs a filing of their own.

Crew filings do not stand alone. A P-1S rides on the driver's P-1A; an O-2 rides on an O-1A. They are filed together or in sequence, their dates have to track the driver's, and each one has to prove a prior working relationship with that driver and skills not readily available here.

The argument that wins is specific. Not "no American mechanic could do this" — that loses. It is the working relationship built around this driver, this car and this setup, over a named number of seasons.

Motorsport has one advantage. The racing team employs the driver, so unlike most individual sports there is a real employer to petition. The weight shifts onto the team's standing, the series, and the race schedule.

Which classification fits

P-1A — the driver

The internationally recognised driver with a real season in a recognised series. The team petitions as employer; the race schedule carries the filing.

O-1A — the driver

Filed on extraordinary ability rather than recognition as an athlete. The route where the season or the series will not carry a P-1A, and it reaches work beyond racing.

P-1S — the crew

Mechanics, crew chiefs, engineers travelling with a P-1A driver. Rides on the driver's petition; needs a prior working relationship and dates that track the driver's.

O-2 — the crew

The same essential-support showing where the driver holds O-1A instead. Which one you file follows the driver.

The kit

Fill-in templates taken from petitions our office prepared — the wording is the wording that went to USCIS — plus the casework behind them, for drivers and crew.

No U.S. employer to petition

If no U.S. team will sign as petitioner, an agent can act as petitioner instead — that is a service, not a template.
